Ryomen Sukuna: The King of Curses

Ryomen Sukuna was a human sorcerer over a thousand years ago who became so powerful that the jujutsu world could not kill him even after death. History: The Original Demon

Over a millennium ago, Ryomen Sukuna was a human sorcerer of incomprehensible power. The jujutsu world of his era threw everything it had at him — armies of sorcerers, coordinated domain expansions, Binding Vows of enormous cost — and still could not kill him. By the time he died of natural causes, the question of what he even was had become unclear: human, curse, or something between.

After death, the cursed energy concentrated in his body prevented decomposition. His corpse was divided into twenty fingers, each one an indestructible Special Grade cursed object. Consuming a finger is extraordinarily dangerous — it begins resurrecting Sukuna inside the consumer's body — yet the fingers have circulated through the jujutsu world for a thousand years because they are impossible to destroy.

His Vessel: Yuji Itadori

Yuji Itadori is unique in his ability to consume Sukuna's fingers without being immediately overwhelmed. His body hosts Sukuna's soul while Yuji retains control the majority of the time. Sukuna can manifest only when Yuji willingly cedes control — or when a Binding Vow forces the transfer.

The Binding Vow between them is the series' central ethical knot: Yuji agreed to allow Sukuna one minute of uncontested control with no memory afterward in exchange for being revived after death. Sukuna used that minute during the Shibuya Incident to catastrophic effect, setting in motion events that define the second half of the story.

Techniques and Domain

Sukuna's primary technique is the Shrine, which manifests two invisible cuts: Dismantle, an indiscriminate slash delivered at range, and Cleave, an adaptive cut that calibrates to its target's cursed energy and physical toughness to guarantee lethality. Combined with his mastery of Reverse Cursed Technique for instant self-healing, he is nearly impossible to kill in direct combat.

His Domain Expansion, Malevolent Shrine, is structurally unique. Rather than sealing himself and his target inside a separate barrier — the standard approach — Malevolent Shrine expands directly into the real world. Every structure and living being within a radius of roughly 200 metres is subjected to the automatic-hit effect of Dismantle and Cleave simultaneously. The destruction during his Shibuya appearance is a direct demonstration of this scale.

What He Wants

Sukuna is not motivated by ideology or revenge. He is motivated by the desire for overwhelming stimulation — the only thing powerful enough to break his eternal boredom. He collects interesting people, preserves threats that might eventually challenge him, and occasionally makes decisions that seem almost merciful purely because predictable outcomes bore him.

Megumi Fushiguro is his most important obsession in the modern era. Sukuna recognises potential in Megumi's Ten Shadows Technique that could, theoretically, produce a vessel capable of containing the full extent of Sukuna's power — a prospect more exciting to him than any amount of destruction.
